What is CrossFit Providence?
CrossFit Providence (CFP) is the local affiliate of CrossFit, providing certified CrossFit coaching and a place to meet a fun and welcoming community committed to fitness.

CrossFit Providence was founded in 2008 by Michael Liberatore, Cpt. Christopher Ahlemeyer, and Joshua Bird.  Visit crossfitprovidence.com for more information.

What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a worldwide institution of fitness: focused on implementing the most effective and comprehensive training methods.  From Navy Seals to Mom, all types of people are benefitting from this CrossFit training regiment.  Visit crossfit.com for more information.

Co-owner Josh Bird explains, “CrossFit is a fitness program designed around the things you do in the real world. Every day, you bend down and pick things up; you put things over your head; you squat down; you stand up; and you run after your kids or jump over a puddle. CrossFit prepares you for these everyday actions by integrating the same functional movements into our workouts, while simultaneously gaining strength and endurance. CFP incorporates exercises from weightlifting, gymnastics, and track and field into our training and we mix it up a lot. Your body is always adapting, getting stronger, faster, and better conditioned. The key to the whole program is that you work really, really hard… so you get fit really, really quickly.”

CrossFit has been described as a program designed to create the quintessential athlete—equal parts gymnast, Olympic weightlifter, and sprinter.  The weightlifting component includes complex, compound movements with heavy loads.  CrossFit also uses kettlebells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, and many calisthenics exercises.  CrossFit may require athletes to run, row, climb ropes, jump up on boxes, flip giant tires, or carry odd objects like rocks and sand bags.  Workouts may also involve bouncing heavy medicine balls against the floor or throwing them into the air to reach a target on the wall. Some of these unique, yet challenging methods have traveled from the shores of Greece to the shores of Rhode Island.

CrossFit Providence Background

CrossFit Providence provides certified CrossFit coaching and motivating CrossFit classes to the public. Supportive coaches not only teach the fundamentals of CrossFit, but they join members in encouraging and challenging each other to complete the workout to the best of their ability. Whether a member’s incentive is to compete in an upcoming competition or just to feel better, CrossFit Providence will help members to reach their goals.  New members surprise themselves everyday with what they are capable of achieving and are continually breaking personal records each workout.

“CrossFit Providence has helped men and women of all ages and abilities see dramatic results in their bodies and health.  Our members report weight loss, increased strength and endurance, as well as better overall performance within weeks.  Come to one of our Grand Opening events and hear it from them!” says co-owner Michael Liberatore.

CrossFit Providence offers three options for training:  CrossFit, CrossFit Boot Camp, and Personal Training.  CrossFit is exactly what one sees online:  intense and exciting workouts combining Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics and ‘cardio’.  CrossFit Boot Camp is less intense, combining bodyweight movements and cardio exercises.  Both are excellent ways to get in shape and members can transfer into both classes.  Personal training is also available upon request.

“We take a long term approach to health and fitness and make sure you master the fundamental movements before increasing the intensity.” says co-owner Christopher Ahlemeyer.

In addition to fitness classes, CrossFit Providence also has on-site sports massage therapy with Ultimate Sports Massage, and mixed martial arts classes with the Mat Santos Fighting Academy. The CrossFit Providence community facilitates participation in all kinds of sports and activities:  Road races, ski trips, mountain climbing, soccer, football, rugby, martial arts, and more.  This creates an atmosphere filled with fun and innovative ways to get in shape. There are always opportunities for members to try something new.

CrossFit Providence in the Community
CrossFit Providence has been active in the community as a member of the “Friends of Brown Street Park” initiative near Hope High School. CFP also plans to introduce CrossFit to local students this summer and seeks help in underwriting that project.

The Rhode Island National Guard’s Success at the Best Ranger Competition in May 2010

Co-owner Cpt. Christopher Ahlemeyer credits his team’s success in the Best Ranger Competition (BRC) to the training he and Staff Sgt. Robert Tobin received at CrossFit Providence:

“Working out at CFP and using CrossFit helped us push through the grueling 60-hour event.  We were competing against Special Forces from all over the nation. Half of the contenders were unable to complete the competition. We finished 14th in the nation and may compete again next year with the help of CFP.”

Captain Christopher Ahlemeyer and Staff Sergeant Robert Tobin of the Rhode Island National Guard placed 14th out of 45 teams in the 2010 Best Ranger Competition.  They made military history, as the National Guard has never before competed in this competition.

The BRC is somewhat comparable to an Iron Man competition, however it is approximately 60 hours long and requires the soldiers to conduct various physical, mental, and skills-based tasks with minimal sleep. Events included a five-mile run with a one-mile swim wearing almost 70 lbs of equipment, two obstacles courses (one of which is one-mile long with about 25 obstacles), a spot jump that involves jumping out of a helicopter and landing by parachute as close as possible to a target (similar to Leapfest which occurs annually in RI), a 15-mile road march carrying roughly 70 lbs in a ruck sack, a night orienteering event requiring teams to navigate throughout the woods to obtain points, and many other challenging events.

"Challenging" does not adequately describe the events completed, nor does it do the competition justice. The competition began at 6:00 am on Friday, May 7 and ended at about 6:00 pm on Sunday, May 9. Completing the BRC was an incredible accomplishment for the RI National Guard team and CrossFit Providence played an integral role in their success.
