PRLog (Press Release) - May 21, 2010 -
St. Louis, MO – The University of Missouri–St. Louis presents Tackling the Tough Skills™: A Curriculum Building Skills for Work and Life, June 8–9, 2010, at the J.C. Penney Conference Center on UMSL’s campus. Back by demand, the 12-hour Dean’s Certificate Program is being offered to coach trainers of hard-to-reach adults and teens prepare for success in the workplace.

Published by the University of Missouri Extension, the certificate program meets requirements for training funded by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Participants will have ample opportunities for practice and discussion and will learn critical life skills related to attitude, responsibility, communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, critical thinking, self-esteem, teamwork, workforce preparation, and stress and anger management.

The program is designed for persons committed to helping hard-to-reach adults and teens, including workplace and organizational educators, adult basic education/GED instructors, workforce development managers, youth coordinators, middle and high school teachers, social workers, case managers, prison specialists, faith-based program leaders, life skills counselors, and anyone wanting to learn new life skills training techniques.

Author and instructor of the program, Rosilee Trotta, developed the program in 1998 to help people transition from welfare to work in the St. Louis area. Since being published in 2000, Tackling the Tough Skills has been impacting diverse audiences of adults and teens throughout the country and around the world. The program was revised in May 2008.

Participants will receive an easy-to-use three-ring binder containing 247 illustrated pages, including 93 pages that may be copied for overheads and handouts. The flexible format allows trainers and educators to select a chapter or an activity or the whole book. The techniques and skills are presented in a creative manner to make learning fun as well as challenging.

The program has a $275 registration fee. The deadline to register is June 1, 2010. To register or for more information, please call Diana Rehagen at (314) 516-6590 or visit the program’s website at http://umslce.org/index.php/tackling-the-tough-skills.
