Prudence is a 21 year-old woman from Zimbabwe, who is the lead singer in a band, Liyana. She is an inspiration, not only because of her success as a singer, but also because of the hardships that she has overcome throughout her life.
Born with Arthrogryposis, a rare debilitating condition, Prudence was shunned by her paternal grandmother, and her and her mother were forced to leave their home. Four years later, caring for Prudence proved to be too much for her mother, and she left. Prudence’s maternal grandmother raised her and this was when Prudence discovered her love for singing. However, when she turned seven, her grandmother knew that she would not be able to give Prudence a proper education, and sent her to live with her father and stepmother.
After living with her stepmother, and being tortured and neglected, Prudence was pushed so far, she attempted suicide - twice. Thankfully, she was introduced to King George VI School & Centre for Children with Physical Disabilities (KG6). At KG6, Prudence began singing in the school choir, as well as an a capella group, and eventually found other students who shared her passion for music and started a band called Liyana.
Music by Prudence tells the tale of an ambitious and inspiring young woman, who does not let her disabilities prevent her from achieving her goals and dreams.
