Whitworth Football Club raises funds for the Andrew Grene Foundation

Whitworth Football Club based in Wellingborough Northants, have chosen to support the Andrew Grene Foundation by holding fundraising events throughout the year.

March 26, 2010 - PRLog -- The Andrew Grene Foundation was set up after the UN peace worker – Andrew Grene - who lost his life in the Haiti earthquake along with millions of others.  Andrew Grene was born in 1965 in Chicago and grew up on the family farm in Ireland.  He devoted much of his working life to the UN, and as a peacekeeping strategist he worked in troubled areas across the globe, from Africa, to Asia to Haiti.  He loved, admired, and believed passionately in what he did, and from the bottom of his being, he believed in the joy, spirit, and potential of the Haitian people.
Andrew’s twin brother Gregory and close friend Tim Perutz, have set up the Andrew Grene Foundation in memory of Andrew to raise funds for the education of children in Haiti and to aid micro financing small scale business that can make the difference between supporting a family and poverty that is beyond most of our imaginations.

Whitworth Football Club were formed in 1973 and are in the United Counties Division League one.  They are nicknamed ‘The Flourmen’ due to the fact that Whitworths provide the best ingredients for baking, cooking, to your breakfast cereals salads and desserts and healthy snacks.  Dan Cooke, Committee Member of the Football Club, has arranged two quiz night events at the club with all the entrance proceeds going to the Andrew Grene Foundation.

The first quiz was held on March 7th and £152.00 was raised.  All teams of four have to pay an entrance fee of £5.00, but some teams paid £5.00 per person when they heard more about the Andrew Grene Foundation boosting the final figure donated.  A raffle was also run on the night and Dan donated the money from this too.  The next quiz night is on 23rd April and is a St George’s Day Special.  Dan Cooke commented ‘We usually hold fundraising events for the club to improve facilities and purchase kit and then hold one charity fundraiser a year, but when we heard about the Andrew Grene Foundation, we really wanted to help.  So, we will be sharing our proceeds from our events to assist with the good work the Andrew Grene Foundation is embarking on and we wish them every success’.

The Football Club are also holding a 6-a-side tournaments on Saturday 3rd July for the over 18’s.  There will be an entrance fee, refreshments and family fun and some of the proceeds from these tournaments are also going to be donated to the Andrew Grene Foundation.

The club are also holding their annual cup match against Wellingborough Town FC, and this year will hold it at Whitworth’s club and use it as an event to open their newly refurbished ground.  Each year they run this match as a charity event.  The committee has decided that this year the charity will be the Andrew Grene Foundation with all profit from the gate being donated along with any other money raised through the halftime raffle etc... The last time the two teams met there were over a 1000 supporters in attendance.  This event will probably take place in May once the football season is over.
