A resident and graduate of the greater Houston area, Melissa M. Williams will visit another HISD school in her efforts to share two passions of her childhood—reptiles and literature. Having met with students from more than 90 schools in Texas this year alone, Melissa M. Williams shares insight into the story writing process, which stemmed and started as early as eight years old. Incorporating student participation, Melissa M. Williams lectures to entire third, fourth and fifth grade classes, and middle school students, offering impromptu sessions where the students learn how to develop a character of their own and become more involved in the story writing process.
Having visited with the students in Scroggins Elementary twice before, the students have first hand knowledge of the story writing process, specifically, Iggy the Iguana. In each of her previous visits to Scroggins Elementary, Melissa M. Williams incorporates student involvement and critique groups to help develop, shape and establish the storyline and finished product in the Iggy the Iguana chapterbook series.
With the support and encouragement of teachers like Mr. Jack and Librarian Jo Reed, Iggy the Iguana has become a student favorite at Scroggins Elementary School. This year, Iggy the Iguana and Melissa M. Williams were honored at the school's Pumpkin-Literature Contest where Iggy the Iguana won first place recognition with the students.
