Proof In The Pudding: Unconventional Style Of Teaching Pays Off

May 21, 2009 - PRLog -- MIT graduate Tommie Henderson never thought of the impact he would make when deciding to build the first charter school in Memphis, Tennessee in 2003.   With the first class of 89 seniors graduating on Sunday, May 31, 2009, his vision has come to fruition. Scheduled to take place from 12pm - 3pm at the prestigious Cannon Center, students, faculty, and supporters will be apart of making history.        
MASE is the first of its kind in the state of Tennessee which targets African-American students who attend schools that are failing or considered to be in “at-risk” situations as defined by the Tennessee Charter School Act of 2002. With technology, math, science and engineering being requirements in many work industries, the level of education has increased significantly. Henderson provides each student a chance to achieve what he knows they are capable of accomplishing by providing a unique curriculum such as extended school hours and six (6) day school weeks. Henderson states, “Many people did not believe in our students. They did not think they could achieve. But on Sunday, May 31, 2009, the graduation will mean more to our seniors than earning a piece of paper, it will empower them to encourage others to strive for the same accomplishments.”
Special guests during the commencement ceremony will include best-selling author and professor Dr. Dennis Kimbro who will deliver the keynote address and Miss Black USA 2008 Kristen White who will open the commencement ceremony with the National Anthem.  Kimbro and White’s contributions during the commencement services will take the event from exciting to educational and motivational. The graduation will be the first of its kind, introducing young, bright, and powerful individuals to uncharted territory.
