ActiveShareFS 2007 (or ActiveShare Federation Service 2007 or ASFS 2007) is a software drop-in solution for enabling secure single sign-on in Microsoft SharePoint 2007 server using open standards such as Shibboleth and SAML. SAML is the Security Assertion Markup Language.
The University of Texas System has deployed the ActiveShareFS 2007 software solution with their Microsoft SharePoint 2007 platform to enable secure seamless collaboration among thousands of students, staff and faculty members from the 15 member campuses spread across the state of Texas. The use of ActiveShareFS 2007 helps University of Texas System achieve reduced helpdesk and SharePoint administration costs involved in creating and managing SharePoint user accounts from 15 member institutions. The University of Texas System SharePoint administrators no longer have to manage user credentials and passwords for users from member campuses, which helps streamline their cost and potential liabilities. In addition, users from each of the 15 Campuses now sign-in to the UT System SharePoint 2007 sites using their local Campus provided credentials and achieve single sign-on. ActiveShareFS 2007 enables secure external authentication in SharePoint 2007 using Shibboleth and SAML standards and automatically provisions users from trusted external partner institutions based on configured business rules. As a result, only trusted users from trusted partner organizations are provisioned and given appropriate level of access to secure parts of the SharePoint server.
