“This is not a pipe” was the very intriguing yet factual statement written by Rene Magritte under his very photographic rendition of a smoking pipe. It was a declaration full of irony but aimed to imprint in the viewer the realization of the intangible nature of art. It looked like a pipe indeed, but was it really a pipe if you couldn’t hold it in your hand and smoke tobacco with it?
In the creative process, there is an unspoken agreement between artist and viewer that implies the notion of make-believe. The artist creates an object that, whether or not it has a counterpart in the real world, always originates in the mind. This tacit understanding is encouraged by the natural tendency of the human mind to explain, to make sense of what it records. When we look at art, our mind instinctively strives to make reference to something already familiar to us.
