Feb. 24, 2009, Washington, D.C.- Recently John Isaacs, the last surviving member of two world championship basketball teams, the 1939 Harlem Renaissance Casino Ballroom team (New York Rens), and the 1943 Washington (Lichtman) Bears, died. Mr. Isaacs visited the DC area last year for a panel about that era, and a ceremonial basketball game. The annual game also commemorates the life of D.C. native Dr. Edwin B. Henderson, an early 20th century educator who introduced basketball to the high schools and YMCA's of the Eastern Seaboard, and coached the Colored national champion Twelfth Street YMCA team in D.C. This Friday, local events will celebrate both men.
To commemorate and conclude Black History Month, the Harlem Magic Masters will be here a week from today to face Falls Church’s best in a tribute game:

“Remembering John “Boy Wonder” Isaacs; Basketball Pioneer Extraordinaire”
The Tinner Hill 2008 Living legacy Awardee, made his transition last week at the age of 94. A giant of a man, who spent the last 50 years of his life working with youth. A panel, including Ed Henderson, grandson of Dr. Edwin B. Henderson, and basketball historian Bijan C. Bayne of the organization DC Basketball, will discuss the implications of Mr. Isaacs' gifts to the world and basketball. Film clips of Mr. Isaacs' visit with us at the game last year will also be shown.
