Meri-K Appy, President of the Home Safety Council® was the featured guest on December 18th on Safety Talk™ Radio. This live radio broadcast was the first in a series featuring information on the Home Safety Council and its programs.
Hosted by Firefighter Dayna Hilton, Safety Talk™ Radio broadcasts bi-weekly. Fire departments and organizations from across the nation showcase their successful fire and life safety programs and initiatives and are welcome to share news of benefit to firefighters and educators.
During the interview, Appy explained that the Home Safety Council® (HSC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing home related injuries that result in nearly 20,000 deaths and 21 million medical visits on average each year. Through national programs, partnerships and the support of volunteers, HSC educates people of all ages about home safety. HSC provides educational resources for teachers, policy makers, corporations as well as fire and life safety experts to help educate and empower families to take actions that will increase the safety of their homes.
In this segment, Appy shared information about the Expert Network, a program designed for firefighters, public health educators and other fire and life safety advocates from around the country. Appy stated that many of these educators are joining the Expert Network to benefit from high quality home injury prevention education tools and services, many of which are downloadable and customizable teaching tools for people of all ages available at no cost. Members of the Expert Network also have access to selected hard copy educational materials sent through the mail, many are free with just the cost of shipping and handling.
