This US Coast Guard-approved class is open to all operators of commercial and private vessels, and provides local training for boaters seeking a career in the maritime trade.

The U.S. Department of Labor projects a faster than average growth rate in water transportation occupations. Captains working as operators of tugboats, towboats, ferries, dredges, offshore supply vessels, and excursion vessels can expect job opportunities to rise by 16-17% through 2016. Furthermore, the Department of Labor reports earnings are expected to be higher than most other occupations with similar educational requirements for entry-level positions.

Captains are in overall command of the operation of a vessel, and they supervise the work of all other crew. A U.S. Coast Guard OUPV license (often referred to as a “6-Pack” license) is required for these positions. Sailing instructors, dive boat operators, fishing charter captains, tour boat operators, and water taxi operators are also occupations that require a Captain’s license. The license allows the holder to carry up to 6 paying passengers in a power-driven vessel on U.S. federal navigable waters.

Course instructor for the Rhinelander class is Explorer’s Guide founder and lead instructor, Captain Gary Kulibert. He worked closely with the USCG to develop the curriculum for the OUPV course, which has been approved by the Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center. The course framework focuses on the practical knowledge a mariner would need to confidently operate as a Captain of a vessel. “Teaching methods were developed to optimize learning and minimize stress,” Kulibert says. “Students enjoy the classes more, retain more, and come out the other end as true Captains, not just as boaters who passed a test.”

Kulibert and his team of hand-picked instructors have conducted maritime training in classrooms from Chattanooga to Valdez, on topics ranging from radar to tidal currents to watchkeeping.

Captain Kulibert is a long-time resident of the Northwoods and understands the challenges boaters face when searching for local maritime training. He had to travel to Manitowoc for his Captain’s training. His company was also the first maritime school in the nation to offer the Captain’s classes online. “We’ve seen a tremendous response to our online courses,” he states. “Online learning puts training within reach of boaters who live in rural or remote areas. It opens up a wide array of career opportunities for boaters that would otherwise not be available to them.”

Explorer’s Guide Maritime Training will conduct the 56-hour OUPV course in Rhinelander, Wisconsin during two consecutive long weekends. The class begins Thursday, September 11, 2008 and runs from 5:30pm - 9:30pm, continues Friday through Sunday from 8:00am – 5:30pm, concluding on Sunday afternoon, September 21, 2008. The cost is $695 per participant. Future classes will be held in Sturgeon Bay, the Madison area, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Green Bay.
