By: Church of Scientology Flag Service Organizati "According to the Centers for Disease Control, deaths from drugs and alcohol rise in December and January," said Ms. Julieta Santagostino, the President of the Foundation's Florida chapter. "People have the idea that alcohol and drugs will help them cope with the added stress from the holidays, but this isn't the case." "Alcohol is a depressant," One way to help stop the overindulgence before it starts, said Ms. Santagostino, is education. "American Addiction Centers surveyed 500 young people between the ages of 18 and 24, and 47% of those surveyed who had received education about drugs said their education helped to keep them away from drugs." Booklets that are part of the overall Truth About Drugs program will be distributed throughout Tampa Bay. The booklets can also be downloaded from www.drugfreeworld.org. The Truth About Drugs is a secular program initiated by the Church of Scientology and Scientologists. Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, "The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances…Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs." "We at the Foundation want people to have a safe and happy holiday season. The Truth About Drugs has, for more than two decades, empowered the millions with the truth about drugs," said Santagostino.
