How to Purchase Lawn Care Services

Some considerations before talking to a lawn care salesperson.

PLAINFIELD, Ill. - Feb. 23, 2023 - PRLog -- Ask yourself: where is your lawn now and what do you want it to look like? Do you want a lush, green carpet ? Free of weeds? Are you concerned about the use of chemicals? Do you understand your part?

Thick Turf:

For patchy or thin grass, consider overseeding and aeration. Overseeding adds grass seed to your lawn. Aeration loosens the soil, allowing vital nutrients to circulate, supporting seed growth.

A lime treatment can help. Lime balances soil pH, allowing grass to better use available nutrients and contributing to great color.

Weed Free Lawn:

If you don't have grass, fertilizer treatments are only feeding the weeds.

The soil of northern Illinois is prone to compaction: great for weeds. A yearly aeration is good to loosen up the soil and an overseeding gives your grass a head start.

Some fertilizers have a pre-emergent component to kill crabgrass and weeds as they sprout. Single, larger treatments work, but they are less effective long term. When done more often at lower doses, the protection lasts longer.

Natural:

Because all herbicides are synthetic, there are challenges to all-natural lawn care. So, the focus is placed on the weed-stopping power of turf density.

To naturally defeat weeds, overseeding and aeration are necessities. Overseeding ensures new, healthy seed is ready when old grass dies off. Aeration helps your turf and seed access air, water and nutrients.

Lime treatments are a natural way to balance soil pH to maximize nutrient availability.

Lawn Care Is a Partnership

A lawn care provider can feed your lawn, treat your weeds, amend your soil and answer your questions. But if you want your yard to look like a fairway, you'll also have to do your part.

Watering:

Deeply water your lawn once or twice a week. Water in the early morning to ensure your lawn has the chance to use the water before the afternoon sun evaporates it.

Mowing:

Mow frequently, but never cut more than ⅓ of the plant at a time. 4" is the ideal height for grass. Sharpen your mower blades every season to ensure clean cuts and to reduce the risk of fungal infections.

Communicate:

Ask your service provider questions and give them feedback. If things aren't progressing like you expected, let them know and find out why.

Red Flags

Most lawn services salespeople are paid for the sale, not for the results. The best advice before picking up the phone is: know your lawn and your goals.
