Upcycling Contest Winners Announced

Wood Pallets and Fast Food Wrappers Make Contestants Winners

HARTFORD, Conn. - June 29, 2021 - PRLog -- The winners of the Newington, 2021 Upcycling Contest were announced Monday night at an awards ceremony held at the Newington Town Hall. Fourteen projects were submitted ranging from a sewn denim handbag to a desk converted into a sewing station. Each person who entered a project received a certificate acknowledging their contribution. Joyce Boncal, the Chairperson of the Upcycling Committee said, "Because of your entries, Newington is a better place to live. Newington thanks you, the State thanks you and the World thanks you because you have reduced your carbon footprint."

In the Individual/Family Contest Division, Jennifer and Travis Ahern received a winner certificate and a $100 gift card for their entry of an outdoor play mud kitchen made from wood pallets and old kitchen utensils. Jennifer said, "We used wood that would otherwise be discarded as well as old household items."

In the Non-profit/Business Contest Division, Carolynn Kowalsky of Cherry Pie Decor received a winner certificate and a $100 gift card for a floral bouquet made out of fast food wrappers. Carolyn said, "My project will help the environment by showing that even garbage can be made beautiful. With creativity, all things can be reused and recycled."

The gift cards were donated by Mil-Aero Solutions, Inc. of Newington.
