Atheist Wrote Lyrics to Christian Songs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - April 16, 2021 - PRLog -- Curiously, when I discovered that an old friend, Mark, turned from a belief in God to atheism it was mind-blowing.  He used to seem like quite a believer in God, even writing poems and lyrics for spiritual songs.  We once wrote some lyrics together and I put them to music, a song which became For You.  We played that song at our church youth group's worship meetings and it was a favorite with to-the-point lyrics about us once being against God while He loved us.

Over the next few years there were other songs that Mark and I collaborated on including worship songs and a love song for his girlfriend.  The love song had lyrics by Mark and music by me and it turned out awesome.  It meant so much to me that I would go on to play it to my soon-to-be-wife on our very first date.

Sounds like a story that should have a happy ending.

No Longer For You

But something changed in Mark.  After high school he went into the military, and I lost touch with him after I got married and moved to another town.  But a few years later, after seeing some online posts by Mark that made me wonder about his beliefs, I asked him what was up with that.  He was quite open about why he had changed and why he now believed in something far different.  I'm still in shock, actually, because the reasons he gave for giving up on God make no sense to me.

Mark told me that he essentially slowly got away from seeking God.  Fair enough.  He was alarmed at first realizing this distancing and made efforts to reaffirm his faith.  But upon further analyzing the situation he concluded that life was no better or no worse, with or without God!  That I found astonishing, as my experiences couldn't be more opposite.

He also told me that unless God's existence could be proven, he could not believe it.  Well, given the mainstream scientific definition of "proof," he'll never have it.  So it seemed like a done deal, even though there really is a ton of evidence strongly supporting God's existence.

Full Circle

Nineteen years after writing that song, For You, I'm looking through my list for a tune to record and am strongly compelled to pick For You, never before recorded.  Strangely, it captures the true essence of how we used to play it.  I hope and pray that Mark will hear this song again, remember why it came about, and that a miracle rekindles the spark once there in him.
