Attorneys are nominated either by top attorneys, research, or by outside legal sources. Once nominated each lawyer is evaluated based on 12 indicators or professional achievement. Candidates are then reviewed by their peers within those practice areas, better known as the "blue ribbon review", and are rated on a scale of one to five. Candidates with the highest rating move on to the final selection process where they are grouped in terms of firm size. Candidates with the highest point totals are selected from each category to be on that year's list for their location.
