Rainwater Harvesting Market Boost for 2016

A new report on the rainwater harvesting market from MTW Research has found that 55% of suppliers experienced growth in revenue and profitability in 2015, with sales set to rise above inflation in 2016.

CHELTENHAM, U.K. - Dec. 4, 2015 - PRLog -- Based on analysis of more than 80% of the industry, the report identifies a number of opportunities for rainwater harvesting in 2016 as household water consumption exceeds 9 billion litres a day and will rise by a further 5% to 2020.  By 2050, total daily domestic consumption of water is forecast to reach some 12.2 billion litres, reflecting a 35% increase according to MTW.

The 130 page report states that there will be more than 60,000 rainwater harvesting systems in use within the next few years, with growth in some key end use sectors remaining reasonably robust, despite water prices set to decline by 5% to 2020.

The housebuilding market is slowly embracing rainwater harvesting according to MTW, with at least one housebuilder identified in the report committing to include rainwater harvesting systems in all its developments in the next 4 years.  Discussing some of the growth opportunities identified in the report, MTW’s director Mark Waddy commented, “Some housebuilders recognise they can add significant value through rainwater harvesting technology and this is providing a volume boost to the market.  Given the forecast upturn in new build activity, the opportunities in this sector for growth are compelling.”

The report also illustrates the non-domestic rainwater harvesting market, and whilst identifying a decline in demand from public sector applications, points to a steady uptake in demand from the commercial and industrial end use sectors.  According to the MTW, certain key end users are now able attain cost savings within 1 year of installation and this, coupled with 100% capital allowances through the Water Technology List, is rendering the commercial rainwater harvesting market increasingly attractive.  Within some key end use sectors, cost savings of £600-£800 per year are typical in commercial buildings where rainwater harvesting has been well designed and implemented.

Whilst market growth has been hampered to some extent by lower cost imports and poorly designed rainwater harvesting systems, there is an increasing polarisation of the market with UK suppliers seeking to offer a higher quality product coupled with an integrated design and maintenance service.  This ‘turn-key’ solution not only offers enhanced customer loyalty, according to MTW, but also boosts the overall perception of rainwater harvesting through the installation of more efficient technology which offers reduced maintenance and faster payback times.

As population growth and more single person households continues to drive rising water consumption levels, the report points to a number of positive longer term trends which should sustain growth across the domestic and commercial end use sectors.  By 2020, MTW forecast growth of more than 20% across the entire rainwater harvesting market, though performance amongst certain key products and end use sectors are set to vary considerably.  Nevertheless, the general tone of the report remains one of optimism with a number of strengths and opportunities continuing to underpin the rainwater harvesting market.  The 2016 rainwater harvesting report is available from MTW Research’s website for £595 or by calling 08456 524324.
