Follow on Google News | Calaycay Design Introduces Philippine Inspired Jewelry CollectionBy: Calaycay Design CALAYCAY DESIGN will be introducing a new Philippine inspired handcrafted jewelry collection, "Disenyo", (the Filipino word for "design"), this month. Christie Calaycay, a Pensacola native and jeweler/owner of Calaycay Design, specializes in handcrafted designs and is now based in Asheville, NC. "I’ve always found the natural beauty of the Philippines and its exotic arts and traditions inspiring. My sister and I wanted to craft a collection that honored our culturally rich ancestral heritage. We were very excited about the opportunity to collaborate and finally exhibit this collection. It has been in the works for a few years now and it's very exciting to finally see it come to life,” commented Christie. "Each piece of this collection will be showcased alongside cultural artifacts and images that inspired the design. This collection was born out of an appreciation for "old world" artistry and traditions native to the Philippines and the country's natural landscape. There is such historical value behind practices like woodcarving and fabric production. We wanted to create a space where creativity, craftsmanship and culture meet.” Calaycay's work is inspired by the graceful quality of nature paying close attention to its patterns and forms. These aspects combined with clean lines, texture and mixed metals framed in modern simplicity create intricate yet subtle designs. All pieces are entirely by hand, from first sketch through final craftsmanship. The jewelry is meant to ground and connect the wearer to nature and the environment, one of the main goals of this new collection. Christie has been designing and making jewelry for over 15 years. In addition to completing an extensive apprenticeship with master jeweler Diannah Beauregard, she is formally trained in Cultural Anthropology and has documented folk artists and traditions for the state of Louisiana. Her sister, Cheryll Calaycay, shares her marketing skills and expertise in product development from years of experience working for well-known NYC fashion labels, focusing on accessories and apparel. Calaycay Design is located in Asheville, NC’s River Arts District and can be found in Van Dyke Fine Art and Craft, the Asheville Art Museum, This Land in Charlotte, Verve in New York City and online. The opening reception and exhibit of the Disenyo Collection will take place at the First City Art Center Gallery, 1060 N. Guillemard Street, Pensacola, FL on November 22, 2015, 3:00pm - 7:00 pm.
