WASHINGTON - Sept. 30, 2015 - PRLog -- Growing up, DC Dough looked up to Jay-Z. “He showed me how to write actual bars and change my cadence,” he says.

Although he’s from D.C., Dough admits he’s never really listened to go-go. While he respects the culture, he’s always been a fan of hip-hop, and by the time he entered junior high school, his friends got him into freestyling and battle raps.

Today, Dough upholds that same raw transparency in his music. “I tell my story,” he says. “Nothing fiction.”

Dough wants exposure as an artist but insists that it usually takes people outside of the city to take notice of the talent within its borders. “It’s so hard getting people to listen because I’m not one of those trendy artists,” he says.

Thusly, the rapper has taken on a team to help him brush up on his business sense and work ethic. “I plan to get a lot of experience and knowledge from DJ Anonymous,” he says. “I’ve only been taking music serious since I’ve been home. Before then it was just something I knew how to do.”

Dough was working on a project when he got locked up. After being released, he ended up putting the musical endeavors of friends before his own. Now, he’s focused on himself. Even though he’s not used to being shown a lot of love, hearing the crowd sing the words to his song at an open mic recently sent him the message to keep going.

As a man, Dough doesn’t take anything for granted – authenticity, loyalty – these are qualities he holds dear. “My top priority is my kids; my kids and my family,” he says. “I would love for my music to provide a certain lifestyle for me but at the same time, I’m not chasing that.”

Given artistic control and the right conditions, Dough is amenable to a major record deal. “I’m just a big fan of people just being themselves,” he says. “As long as I’m not doing things to compromise myself as a man and what I believe in, and it’s right for me and my family, I’d do it.”

To Dough, Jay-Z is the greatest to ever do it, so he wants to be better than him.

He says, “That’s where the bar’s at.”

"Regal Begal" drops October 13th via Spinrilla.
