PLANO, Texas - July 16, 2015 - PRLog -- It is a common concern that ball moss may be killing a homeowner's tree. Is it really doing that? What is Ball Moss anyway? First of all, contrary to what many would assume, it is not a parasitic plant that gains sustenance from your tree. It turns out, it is actually in the same family as pineapples, called bromeliads. Ball Moss is also an epiphyte, which makes it similar to mosses, lichens, algae, and even some ferns. This moss can spread and grow practically anywhere, including power lines, walls, gutters, or even an old car.

Instead of the misconception that they draw nutrients from a tree, it is actually gained through the air. They also spread through tiny air-born spores, carried by the wind, rain, and small animals. It is known however, that it can cause some minor damage to trees if left to grow out of control, because it can choke the growth of leaves when it gets too thick. Besides this, there are no other major concerns. The best time to remove the ball moss is during pruning, as a large percentage of it will come off with the limbs that you remove. If you feel that it did not remove enough, talking to an arborist, Justin's Tree Service for example, about safely removing as much as possible of the eye-sore that is ball moss.
