By: Clark Seif Clark (CSC) Another group of indoor pollutants has also begun to receive growing attention from many scientists and public health advocates. These pollutants are a group of chemicals known as endocrine disruptors. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, “Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife.” These substances can be either naturally occurring or man-made and people can be exposed to them in numerous ways. A partial list of known and suspected endocrine disruptors includes: · Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) · Bisphenol A (BPA) · Perchlorate · Phthalates · Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds · DDT · Fire Retardants · Arsenic · Cadmium · Lead · Mercury “Many of these substances are believed to be endocrine disruptors and in some circumstances can be found in commercial and residential properties,” The building science and indoor environmental quality professionals at CSC utilize advanced instrumentation and decades of experience to identify indoor pollutants to protect building occupants.
