Why skincare?

Skin problems are very common in people with diabetes[1]. If the blood sugar levels in people with diabetes become high the body loses fluid which causes the skin to become dry and itchy. This occurs because the body is turning the water into urine as a way of removing the excess sugar from the blood. People with diabetes can also get dry skin as a result of diabetic neuropathy because the nerves, especially those in the legs and the feet, do not receive the message to sweat which helps keep your skin soft and moist.

Foot care amongst people with diabetes is also incredibly important as foot related complications are very common. Foot ulcers, which can develop as a result of dry skin[2], affect as many as 1 in 10 people with diabetes. Even very small ulcers can present a significant risk as they can develop into serious lower body infections with the possibility of amputation at an advanced stage.
