Charity reaches out to carers of people with dementia

OXFORD, U.K. - June 9, 2015 - PRLog -- The charity is offering a new Carers Befriending Service, which provides trained volunteers to visit adult carers of older people with dementia or memory loss, to listen and offer appropriate advice to each individual's situation.

Yolande Smith, Carer Befriender Service Coordinator  from Age UK Buckinghamshire explains: "Caring for someone with dementia is particularly hard; having to watch a person you love deteriorate and succumb to the illness. And many of these carers are older people themselves.

"Dementia will often be only one facet of a number of long-term health problems that a carer has to deal with and the psychological, emotional and physical stresses for carers are immense. This service is not for people who experience dementia, although an awareness of dementia and its effects will be necessary for our volunteers."

Age UK  Buckinghamshire volunteers will make regular visits to ensure that the carer’s needs and wishes are met wherever possible. As well as offering a listening ear, they can help write a letter or make an appointment, but above all they will build a relationship with the person providing the care.
