Follow on Google News | Addressing Senior Hunger in GeorgiaProject Generation Gap Partners with Mending the Gap to Provide Fresh Fruit and Vegetables to Seniors in Need in Gwinnett County, Georgia
By: Project Generation Gap On May 19, 2015, PGG will bring a group of volunteers to Applewood Towers, an affordable housing community for seniors, in Lawrenceville, Georgia. There they will install an irrigation system for the entire garden and plant food in some of the raised beds. PGG is looking for additional volunteers to join the workday on May 19th, along with other workdays related to ongoing maintenance of the garden. PGG spokesperson, Sagdrina Jalal, states, “The seniors are very appreciative for the efforts and are excited to have fresh food growing in their backyard, many of them have health conditions and limited mobility that make it difficult for them to maintain a garden on their own. Volunteers would be able to contribute to our ongoing efforts to decrease food insecurity for seniors in Georgia.” Others contributing to the May 19th workday are Brennan and Gwendolyn Washington of Phoenix Gardens, the Master Gardeners of Gwinnett, Food Well Alliance, and the Home Depot of Lilburn. Project Generation Gap is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides support to farmers and educates the community on food access. Housed at the High Garden Center, a 3.5-acre farm in Snellville, they are supporting the local food system by offering farmer training and support, food demonstrations and education, and incentive programs (such as Wholesome Wave) at local Farmers’ Markets.
