Congregation B’nai Israel to Present Concert Featuring “The Great American Songbook”

The public is invited to attend “The Great American Songbook,” a concert for the entire family featuring the best of Broadway and popular music, Sunday, May 17, at 4 p.m., at Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI), Basking Ridge.

The event, which will launch a new Cultural Arts Series at the synagogue, will showcase the talents of six professional singers, four pianists, and two community choirs. The soloists and musicians—including a clarinet, bass violin and drum ensemble—will offer fresh interpretation to classic and contemporary music. A few selections of world music also will be included.

The soloists include Sharon Brown-Levy of West Orange, soprano; Riki Lippitz of South Orange, mezzo-soprano; Sharon Knoller of Livingston, alto; Brian Kalver of Morristown, tenor; Perry Fine of Livingston, baritone; Donald Kalbach of Bound Brook, bass; as well as pianists Linea Rondael of Union, David Schlossberg of Monroe, Harris Engel of Livingston, and international guest artist Atilgan Kaptanoglu of Istanbul.

The performers’ repertoire extends from American art song and popular composers through the Beatles’ years and the carefully crafted music from the Middle East and modern Europe. Members of two community choirs, Music in the Somerset Hills and Voices In Harmony of Essex County, will share their talents in the choral pieces.

Tickets are available in four categories: Premium, $100 (Rows 1-3); Preferred, $75 (Rows 4-6); general admission, $15; seniors and children under 12, $10. Aisle seats will be reserved for those needing assistance. Rows 1-6 in the sanctuary will be reserved for Premium and Preferred patrons, whose tickets will help underwrite the performance.
