Saving Brains – Saving Lives

WARWICK, R.I. - April 22, 2015 - PRLog -- Brain In Play Foundation Nonprofit teams up with Providence Community Library for the national launch of their new brain-saving book, Winning the War Against Concussions In Youth Sports. On Wednesday April 29, 2015 at 5:45 pm the authors present their concussion prevention and healing system for athletes under 21 at Knight Library, 275 Elmwood Ave in Providence RI, joined by a concussed N/E Patriot NFL Veteran. The book’s mission is to save youth brains and save youth sports, especially the high risk sports of soccer, hockey, football lacrosse and others, while also improving athletic and academic performance. The book is primarily written for players, parents and coaches – the public is warmly invited to attend.

The ground-breaking book’s launch comes on the heels of NFL star rookie Chris Borland’s ‘healthy’ retirement in March 2015 to avoid concussive brain damage (forfeiting millions of dollars), book author Dr. Ashare’s recent appearance on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” TV Show to educate the nation that helmets do not significantly reduce concussions (but do prevent skull fractures), the on-field death of 25 y.o. rugby star Nick Tooth April 18, 2015, and the legal suit brought against the Illinois High School Sports League over concussions. A book signing follows the presentation, with all proceeds going to Brain In Play’s nonprofit foundation. Paperback and Kindle versions are available at www.BrainInPlay.org .

The book is authored by clinician scientists and former hospital executive officers Bill and Katharine White, Cofounders of Brain In Play International-Brain In Play Foundation, and Dr. Alan Ashare of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Tufts Medical School – an iconic youth sports head injury physician safety advocate who originated “Heads Up-Don’t Duck”. The book offers a new fast-track brain wellness intervention based on the latest medical science that helps prevent and heal concussive injuries by improving the functioning, preservation and growth of brain cells, called BE CHAMPS 24/7, that includes an honor code that prevents youth from playing ‘head hurt’. The authors hope to get the book to 100,000 middle, high school and college athletes, parents, coaches and teachers via their foundation.

Brain In Play Foundation, a RI based nonprofit, will also spread awareness about their just published solution-book with concussion prevention and healing dance challenges spread by social media (You Tube, Face-Book, Twitter etc.). This dance initiative has been coined by author Bill White, “Do the Doc Wiggle”, to honor Dr. Ashare’s 3+ decades of tireless volunteer commitment to improve and save youth sports by addressing safety issues. The challenge is supported by famed musicians, World Premier Band (Boston). Page | 2 Stay tuned for ways to participate at www.BrainInPlay.org – as there will be individual, team, group, youth (including toddlers) and pets all doing the Doc Wiggle Brain Dance to save youth brains/lives and sports!

Author Bill White, a two decade youth sports coach and parent of five high school athletes quickly said, “This book is first dedicated to all youth and families that have suffered a sports head injury, and next to all youth athletes, parents, and coaches actively supporting youth sports today.” Bill and coauthor wife Katharine are also the parents of a seriously concussed child who had a years-long long recovery period. Dr. Ashare’s is USA Hockey’s National Safety Committee Director, President of the Hockey Equipment Certification Council and Medical Director of Massachusett’s High School Interscholastic League.

Brain In Play’s national profile includes unveiling BE CHAMPS 24/7 at Mayo Clinic’s International Concussion Summit, keynoting the NFL/NHL Players Against Concussions (PAC) launch event on behalf of Jim McMahon (NFL All-Pro Super-Bowl Winning QB) and Jeremy Roenick (Nine-time NHL All-Star), observing NFL brain autopsies at Dr. Ann McKee’s VA/BU Brain Lab and sponsoring the world champion Pro-Women’s Professional Hockey Team Boston Blades.
