OnApp announces DRaaS - Disaster Recovery as a Service for cloud providers

OnApp DRaaS brings affordable Constant Data Protection to OnApp clouds, extends cloud hosting to enterprise applications with the most stringent resilience requirements

LONDON - March 24, 2015 - PRLog -- OnApp has announced OnApp DRaaS  - a new Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service capability for the OnApp cloud platform used by public, private and hybrid cloud service providers worldwide. OnApp DRaaS adds real-time data replication and restore to OnApp clouds. It enables service providers to offer Constant Data Protection (CDP) for enterprise applications and data that demand the highest possible resilience, and expands the range of applications that businesses are willing to host 'in the cloud'. OnApp DRaaS is now in beta testing with OnApp cloud providers. General availability is planned for Q3 2015.

OnApp DRaaS uses distributed cloud capacity over secure connections to replicate virtual server data in real time. It's the latest addition to the resilient cloud hosting capabilities of the OnApp cloud platform, which include virtual machine snapshots, incremental backup, distributed storage for virtual servers, automatic failover for entire hypervisors, and multi-cloud hosting. By combining OnApp DRaaS with OnApp's other backup and failover capabilities, cloud providers can create services with the appropriate price/redundancy characteristics for everything from temporary development sandboxes to enterprise applications that need to comply with strict data protection regimes for medical, legal, financial or government data.

"When you build your cloud hosting service on OnApp, you already have a range of technologies in place to help protect your customers' data," said Julian Chesterfield, OnApp's Director of Emerging Technologies. "For many cloud workloads, the backup and failover mechanisms built into OnApp are more than enough. OnApp DRaaS is all about providing the total "asteroid destroyed our datacenter" protection that enterprise workloads need."

"With OnApp DRaaS, you can use our integrated storage system to create very resilient local cloud storage, on the hardware you're already using for your cloud, and replicate in real time to a remote OnApp DRaaS site with no impact on performance," he said. "That gives OnApp clients the sort of asteroid-proof reliability they need to bring the most demanding enterprise workloads into their cloud, and sell DRaaS-enabled cloud hosting services without having to invest in building their own remote replication sites."

OnApp DRaaS builds on OnApp Storage, the advanced distributed SAN built into the OnApp cloud platform. OnApp Storage distributes virtual server data across disks in an OnApp cloud's hypervisor servers. OnApp DRaaS uses block-level write intercepts for virtual servers that use OnApp Storage in order to replicate that server's data, in real-time, to one or more remote disaster recovery sites. OnApp DRaaS maintains continuous synchronization between the local virtual server and the remote copy; continuously monitors the availability of the local server; and provides configurable alerts and failover mechanisms to enable the virtual server to migrate to the remote location if a local outage occurs.

OnApp DRaaS will offer two primary disaster recovery models. In the first, OnApp will manage a number of remote replication sites across multiple regions. In the second, cloud providers with multiple datacenters of their own will be able to host their own disaster recovery sites. In each case, OnApp DRaaS will enable cloud providers to choose the specific locations used for disaster recovery, so they can offer remote DRaaS sites in far-removed locations, or replicate data within a given geography, when it needs to be kept within a specific jurisdiction.

OnApp DRaaS is fully integrated with OnApp's intuitive control panel for cloud provisioning and management.  It provides an intuitive disaster recovery dashboard for an 'at-a-glance' view of the replication status of clouds and virtual servers, which can be accessed either by cloud providers or their customers.

The OnApp DRaaS beta will be demonstrated at WHD.global 2015, the world's largest event for the hosting industry, at Europa Park in Germany from 24-26th March 2015. Julian Chesterfield. OnApp's Director of Emerging Technologies, will also present OnApp DRaaS at his keynote on 25th March during the event.

About OnApp
