Triangle Land Conservancy to Celebrate Earth Day with a Week of Activities around the Triangle

 
RALEIGH, N.C. - March 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Triangle Land Conservancy has celebrated Earth Day every year since our inception in 1983. This year, join us and people from more than 192 countries around the world in celebrating the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. While Earth Day officially happens on April 22, 2015, TLC has planned a week of activities in honor of this special day and to celebrate conserving over 17,000 acres of land in the Triangle. EarthShare NC Corporate Challenge
When: Thursday, April 16th, 1-4pm
Where: Horton Grove, Durham County

The EarthShare NC Corporate Challenge gives employee teams from local sponsor companies an opportunity to work directly with a deserving environmental nonprofit in our community. Sites include the Triangle Land Conservancy’s Horton Grove Nature Preserve in Durham County. Employee teams will celebrate the good work accomplished at an after party with food and drinks from 4:30-6:30pm at Social Games and Brews in Durham.

Walking with the Giants*

When: Monday, April 20th
Where: Johnston Mill, Orange County (10am- Noon)

When: Wednesday, April 22nd
Where: Horton Grove, Durham County (4-6pm)

When: Thursday, April 23rd
Where: White Pines, Chatham County (10am –Noon)

When: Friday, April 24th
Where:  Swift Creek Bluffs, Wake County (4-6pm)

When: Saturday, April 25th
Where: Temple Flat Rock, Wake County (10am-Noon)

Triangle Land Conservancy and the Center for Human-Earth Restoration (CHER) will present a one-week series of nature hikes featuring the wisdom and writings of environmental giants such as Leopold, Berry, Muir, Carson, Carver and others. “Shinrin Yoku” will be practiced on the walk and time is included for journaling as a way to reflect on the day. If you dream of time to bring your heart closer to the Earth, then register for one or all of these hikes led by Randy Senzig, Executive Director for CHER. All ages are welcome and pets must be on a leash. The final hike at Temple Flat Rock will also serve as our annual “Spring into Temple Flat Rock” event.

Birding at Horton Grove*
When: Tuesday, April 21st, 7:30am
Where: Horton Grove, Durham County

Join TLC’s Communications Manager and amateur birder Diana Hackenburg for a morning of birding at Horton Grove Nature Preserve in Durham County. All ability levels welcome. Bring your own binoculars!

EarthShare NC Earth Day Leadership Breakfast
When: Wednesday, April 22nd, 8-9:30am
Where: 21c Museum Hotel, 111 N Corcoran Street, Durham

Celebrate the 45th Anniversary of Earth Day with TLC and many other local non-profits and businesses by being one of the first guests at 21c Museum Hotel, opening April 2015 in the rehabilitated, historic Hill Building in downtown Durham.

Earth Day Paddles
When: Wednesday, April 22nd and Sunday, April 26th (10am meet time, trips run 3.5 - 5 hours)
Where: Deep River Park (Endor Iron Furnace trip), (directions with be sent to registered participants)
Cost: $49/person ($39 with TLC discount)

Join Triangle Land Conservancy and Frog Hollow Outdoors as we cruise our way down the Deep River. Each month we will paddle a different section of the Deep River making our way along the Chatham/Lee County line until nearing the confluence with the Haw River, where they become the Cape Fear.  Each section of river holds its own surprises, some have amazing historic ruins or interesting geologic features, while others have fun and challenging Class I-II rapids.  These trips include a canoe or kayaks and guide service. Sand County Almanac Reading
When: Wednesday, April 22nd, 7-9pm
Where: The Regulator Bookshop, Durham

Join us to hear Aldo Leopold’s famous book, A Sand County Almanac, read by WUNC radio host Frank Stasio, Duke Forest Director Sara Burns, poet Ken Rumble, TLC's Diana Hackenburg, students and faculty of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, members of the environmental community and local political leaders. This event is co-sponsored by the Durham County Library and the Forest History Society. No registration necessary.

Earth Day Hike with TLC and Historic Stagville*
When: Friday, April 24th, 1pm
Where: Horton Grove and Horton Grove Nature Preserve

Triangle Land Conservancy and Historic Stagville will give a tour of Horton Grove’s slave houses, the Great Barn, and a hike featuring one of TLC’s newest trails named after the Sowell family. Learn about the history and evolving land use of what was once one of the largest pre-Civil war plantations at 30,000 acres and 900 slaves in the 1860s.

Spring into Temple Flat Rock*
When: Saturday, April 25th, 10am
Where: Temple Flat Rock, Wake County (directions will be provided to registrants)

Visit TLC's first conservation easement where 5,270 square meters of exposed granite rock supports a unique community of lichens, bryophytes, and angiosperms (flowering-plants). In addition, this site is notable for being a Piedmont prairie restoration site. This event is part of the “Walking with the Giants” series with Randy Senzig, Executive Director of the Center for Human-Earth Restoration.

Earth Day Trail Crew*
When: Saturday, April 25th, 9am
Where: White Pines Nature Preserve

Come help Kyle Obermiller, TLC’s Land Maintenance Technician, build trails at White Pines. This preserve holds a special spot in TLC’s history as it is the organization’s first preserve.  Children must be at least 12 years old.  Equipment will be provided.  Please bring water and wear sturdy shoes.
