Strickland to Lead Persuasive Writing Workshop

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Feb. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- Pam Strickland, former popular op-ed political columnist for the "Knoxville News Sentinel," will teach a workshop on writing persuasively for op-eds and other purposes from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 21 at Remedy Coffee, 125 W. Jackson Ave. Sponsored by the Knoxville Writers' Guild, cost is $35 for KWG members and $40 for nonmembers.

Strickland, who currently blogs at pamstrickland.org, said the event will help writers focus their opinions by finding the hook that will make readers care about even the most esoteric issue.

"The key to good opinion writing is to make it personal and to be frank and forthright with facts. Emotions are nothing if there are no facts to back it up," she said.

Strickland encourages participants to submit via email a few ideas for writing pieces for discussion. A former government and political newspaper reporter and a high school and college instructor, she has contributed creative nonfiction essays to a number of anthologies including the award-winning "Tennessee Women of Vision and Courage." She is also a freelance editor and writing coach. She can be emailed at pamstrickland@mac.com.

Workshop attendees are encouraged to take advantage of the city's free weekend parking, including a parking lot under a viaduct next to Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria, 200 E. Jackson Ave. To register, visit www.knoxvillewritersguild.org or send your check to KWG Workshops, P.O. Box 10326, Knoxville TN 37939-0326.
