By: Rebecca School Keynote speaker Dr. Stephen Shore is the President emeritus of the Asperger’s Association of New England and also a former board member of the Autism Society. Author of 'Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome','Ask and Tell: Selfadvocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum', and also 'Understanding Autism for Dummies', Dr. Shore is not only an autism advocate, but someone diagnosed with 'Atypical Development and strong autistic tendencies' as well as being considered 'too sick' for outpatient treatment. Dr. Shore was recommended at a young age for institutionalization. "We're shifting from the current model of seeing autism as a collection of deficits to an appreciation of the strengths of people on the autism spectrum,” he says. Throughout the conference, breakout sessions will be provided and will include a wide variety of presentation options. All of the presenters are Rebecca School staff and represent the interdisciplinary DIR® approach including SLPs, OTs, PTs, teachers, music therapists, teaching assistants, and mental health professionals. Participants will be able to choose which break out session they would like to attend, include sensory integration, classroom literacy, promoting symbolic play, basics of DIR® /Floortime, music therapy, and case study presentations. DIR® stands for Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship- Founded in 2005, the Rebecca School is a state of the art facility built specifically for working with the children the school serves that includes large sensory gyms, multiple art and music rooms, large sunny classrooms with smart boards and amplification systems and a rooftop playground. Keynote speaker Dr. Gil Tippy, PsyD, Clinical Director of the Rebecca School, recently co-authored a book with Dr. Greenspan, entitled 'Respecting Autism: The Rebecca School DIR Casebook for Parents and Professionals'. He also co-authored a journal article, “Attachment and Autism: Parental Attachment Representations and Relational Behaviors in the Parent-Child Dyad” (Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 2010) as well as contributed a chapter on DIR®/Floortime™ Registration is now open and will remain open until Apr 24, 2015.
