Getting Students College-Ready with SAT/ACT Professional Development

Behind the Score Improvement Success at Manhattan Hunter Science High School
MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Feb. 4, 2015 - PRLog -- Manhattan Hunter Science High School (MHSHS), now officially has the highest SAT scores of any high school in the CUNY Network, and A-List Education’s extensive teacher training and support has proven instrumental in this success. For the last several years, A-List has provided SAT professional development to MHSHS staff – training teachers in SAT content, relevant alignment with Common Core standards, utilizing effective materials, and incorporating A-List’s content and assessment portal with vital data and analytics into best practices – as well as supplemental direct instruction for students.

The real story lies in the numbers. MHSHS students’ SAT scores are consistently improving with average scores increasing +186 points since 2012 (average 1,446). To put things in perspective, NYC’s average score improvement from 2012 to 2014 is +15 points, while the national average score improvement during that time is a mere +1 point. MHSHS Class of 2015’s average SAT score totaled 1632—that’s +135 points above the last reported national average SAT score and +292 points above NYC’s latest average.  Manhattan Hunter Science Principal, Kevin Froner, says, “…The bottom line is that in addition to outperforming most New York City high schools, our SAT math scores are higher than 70% of suburban Westchester schools, many of which, have median incomes more than triple of what our families earn.

These improved standardized test scores earn MHSHS students much more than bragging rights. Performing well on the SAT provides these students with the opportunity to earn a full scholarship to Hunter College, through a separate private funding partnership. More than 75% of MHSHS students now qualify for a full ride to Hunter—the highest percentage of qualifying students in the school’s history.

This combination of SAT/ACT professional development and dedication on the part of both teachers and students is creating a pattern of success that A-List hopes to replicate with more schools throughout the NY Tri-State area and across the country.
