Go back to basics in La Plagne

Enjoy the raw energy of the mountains, without any distractions

Jan. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- As ski resorts increasingly strive for bigger, better and more impressive attractions - think clubbing bars and Michelin-starred eateries - there’s still a lot to be said for the simple things in life. La Plagne, France is proud to offer both: whilst it can put on the razzle-dazzle as well as any of its Alpine competitors (where else can you ride in a bobsleigh with an Olympic champion, climb a 24-metre ice tower or spend the night in a ‘Hot Igloo’, for example?), it has been careful to retain its traditional appeal, too. So why not go back to basics in La Plagne this season, and enjoy these charming experiences…

Stay in a Wi-Fi free refuge

We’re becoming slaves to electronic gadgets. Why not escape into the wilderness, away from your electronic life, in a Wi-Fi free dormitory in the Vanoise National Park? Enjoy the views down the valley when cooking over your wood fire. Each hut is managed sustainably, including grocery products from organic farms plus fair trade goodies. As night draws in, sit back, relax and stare at the stars; sheer luxury. (A night in the Vanoise National Park costs from €22 / £17 pp including dinner, bed and breakfast.)

Cook your own
côte de boeuf in Le Refuge

The oldest restaurant in La Plagne, Le Refuge, run by the Montmayeur family, is known as the ‘bistro of the locals’. And Pierre (the nephew of the creator) can still be found serving drinks behind the bar. Grilled meats are one of their specialities, and each table has a copper hood suspended above it so guests can cook their own, exactly as they like it.

Ski with Bibi

An instructor at Belle-Plagne ski school since 1986, Alain Juglair (nicknamed Bibi) knows the mountains like the back of his hand. He takes clients off the beaten track and shows them secret powder pockets and paths away from the slopes. Married to a local restaurateur, Bibi has a strong personal network, ideal for creating your special day out. Plus, he serves a delicious picnic… (A day’s skiing with Bibi costs €360 / £282 pp excluding food.)

Create your perfect crème brûlée in Le Grizzli

Le Grizzli is a traditional French restaurant in Plagne Centre. The dark wooden furniture and exposed stonework gives it a rustic yet cosy feel. Plus the welcoming, friendly team will let you sizzle your steak on the fire and blow torch your crème brûlée

Sleep surrounded by snow

Visit La Plagne’s very own Igloo Village at Plagne Soleil, 2118 m. Because snow is an excellent insulator, once inside, igloos are surprisingly warm. Stop off at the igloo restaurant before wrapping up and enjoying an evening at one with the elements under the famous Mont Blanc. (A night in the Igloo Village costs from €99 / £78 pp including dinner, bed and breakfast.)

A week’s stay in Plagne Centre costs from €269 pp including a six-day ski pass / approx. £211 pp (four sharing). Return flights (London-Geneva) from £64 pp with easyJet. Call La Plagne on +33 (0)4 79 09 79 79 (www.la-plagne.com) to book. (English-speaking staff available.)
