He was the first American ever to play in the English Premier League, before joining DC United in 1996 and leading the club to back-to-back MLS Cup championships. Harkes was also a member of the US National Soccer Team throughout the 1990s, playing in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. He ended his national team career with 90 caps and 6 goals.
