Types of anesthesia used in Liposuction

Although the term anesthesia makes people little nervous but it is essential for smooth operation and quick recovery. Different types of anesthesia not only used as a pain reliever but to control the natural reactions of the body to pain or trauma.

LONDON - Dec. 12, 2014 - PRLog -- Although there are four types of anesthesia available but not all are applicable to every types of surgery or more specifically, to liposuction. Local, regional, general, conscious sedation are the basic types of anesthesia. Liposuction s generally performed using either general or local anesthesia. The choice depends on the surgeons preference and on how large area to be treated. Local anesthesia numbs a small area and mostly used during smaller plastic surgical procedures. This shot often consists of lidocaine, but there are several local anesthesias that are used. A topical local anesthesia can be applied to the skin to numb the area. General anesthesia can be given as an inhaled gas or as a liquid administered intravenously, often referred as the dry technique. Patients will be completely asleep during the general anesthesia.

But dry technique is basically outdated, for high toxicity issues, moreover the general anesthesia doesn’t really do anything to prepare the skin to face the invasiveness of the cannula and result in blood loss. If one has to combine general and local anesthesia then it further raises the volume of the anesthesia administered, hence raising the toxicity issue. The best anesthetic is to administer the general anesthesia through inhalation, and the local anesthesia injected subcutaneously as in a wet or super wet solution.

Sedative is a drug to keep a patient calm and relaxed during a surgery with local anaesthesia. Oral sedative like Valium can be used for one can receive it intravenously. Generally intravenous lines are inserted into the arms of the patients. A bag of saline fluid will be attached that will be used to keep the body hydrated. Patient will be aware and awake but feel relaxed. Sometimes patients feel sleepy or even nod off during   surgery because of sedation.

Epinephrine is used to constrict blood vessels whereas Lidocaine is a local anesthetic used for pain control. For more details please visit at http://www.harleybodyclinic.co.uk .

Anesthesia works as a pain reliever, by creating unconsciousness, by immobilizing and by reducing automatic responses such as increased heart beat, rapid breathing and rise in blood pressure.

General anesthesia carries more risks than local or sedation carries. However the risks of allergic reactions to the drugs being used, even if one had anesthesia safely in past. Surgeons must be well informed about the health condition (like allergies, asthma, and lung, heart or circulatory conditions) of the patients.

As there is many types of liposuction, anesthesia variety are also in use. Such as Vaser Lipo that works through ultrasound assisted cannulas also demand anesthesia. Vaser hi def liposuction cost in London starts at £2600.As the Vaser Hi def takes little longer time than traditional VASER and requires more local anesthetic. More anxious patients are offered additional IV sedation. But it is only 5% of the total patients who are going for liposuction.
