By: One Source Industries In remembrance of his dedication to the company and to the betterment of the surrounding community, the William Belzberg Humanitarian Award Scholarship will recognize Junior or Senior high school students, as well as undergraduate college students, who excel in their efforts to give back to the community. The overall winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship to be used for tuition and other academic expenses. Two runners-up will each receive $2,500 scholarships to be used for the same purposes. All OSI and Westminster Capital employees and their children are eligible to apply. Temporary employees who have been with the company for two years or more are also eligible to apply. Well known in the Los Angeles, Canadian and U.S. business communities, Belzberg has dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. He served as National Chairman of Israel Bonds, headed the Prime Ministers Club for Israel Bonds and served in important leadership roles with the Los Angeles United Jewish Federation and The Israel Tennis Center. Additionally, he served as a member of the Board of Governors of Cedars Sinai Medical Center and as a board member of the Weizmann Institute of Science and Claremont College. Together with his brothers, he helped found the Yeshiva University High School in Los Angeles, The Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation. Belzberg was a Trustee of the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies as well as a member of its executive committee. In addition to his humanitarian efforts, Belzberg was also a highly respected business leader. He served as chairman and president of First City Financial, a company he founded with his brothers to provide real estate financing to developers. Later in his career, he went on to assume the positon of chairman and CEO of Westminster Capital, a then publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange that later became a privately owned company under his direction. Whether in business or community service efforts, Belzberg lived life to the fullest. Thanks to the William Belzberg Conference Room and the William Belzberg Humanitarian Award Scholarship, his wit, charm and magnetic personality will continue to live on through the lives of OSI employees and their children.
