SMITHTOWN, N.Y. - Oct. 8, 2014 - PRLog -- Halloween tends to be one of the busiest times of the year at orthodontists' offices, primarily because patients eat treats that they should not be eating. Candies and other treats that are hard, chewy, sticky or crunchy can cause damage to orthodontic patients' braces. Broken braces can be uncomfortable for the patient and may even prolong treatment. As part of October’s National Orthodontic Health Month, Dr. Smith is providing braces-friendly Halloween tips to help orthodontic patients and parents enjoy the holiday.

Look for softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods.

Any foods that are sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy should be avoided by anyone wearing braces or retainers.

“Halloween is a fun holiday for kids of all ages,” says Dr. Smith. “But too much candy can contribute to tooth decay. And for people who wear braces, eating sticky or chewy candies can harm their braces and may lengthen their orthodontic treatment.  If orthodontic patients are careful about the Halloween treats they eat, they can keep their braces intact and should be able to finish treatment on time and with good results.”

Dr. Smith and his team at North Shore Orthodontics are conducting several activities to educate the public and their patients about protecting their teeth during Halloween.  This year, they are holding a Candy Buy Back program so that patients don’t have to miss out on the trick-or-treating fun.  Patients will be awarded $1 per pound of candy brought to the office.  Dr. Smith will accept candy November 3rd-7th and in turn, will donate the candy overseas to our troops.

North Shore Orthodontics is a local orthodontic practice that serves Smithtown and the Long Island area.  Dr. Craig Smith uses the latest technological advances in the industry, such as invisible ceramic braces, lingual braces and Invisalign®, along with the latest in computer technology to ensure that patients receive the most effective care possible.
