BOULDER, Colo. - Sept. 10, 2014 - PRLog -- Two-time IRONMAN World Champion Mirinda Carfrae and XTERRA/IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion Julie Dibens are teaming up with World Bicycle Relief to raise funds for MAWA, a program focusing on maternal health and nutrition in Zambia. During the campaign, Carfrae and Dibens will highlight how bikes and the mobility they provide support the both the health and economic development of mothers, families and communities in Zambia and beyond.

According to MAWA, the one thousand days from the start of a woman’s pregnancy until her child’s second birthday offer a unique window of opportunity to shape healthier and more prosperous futures. Proper nutrition and health practices during this period can make a big difference in a baby’s ability to grow into a smart, healthy and strong child. MAWA’s goal is to distribute 900 bicycles to female nutrition volunteers.

During this campaign, Carfrae and Dibens will turn their passion for pedaling into action and impact. Leading up to the IRONMAN World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, these two world-class athletes hope to raise $50,000 for MAWA’s program through their fundraising efforts with World Bicycle Relief.

"I believe that good nutrition should be accessible in any part of the world—be it on the IRONMAN course or in the most rural part of Africa. As a professional athlete, I have access to the best diet on race day. The bicycles that World Bicycle Relief will provide as part of the MAWA program will help ensure women and children in Zambia have greater access to good nutrition to face their 'daily race'." -Julie Dibens

World Bicycle Relief is dedicated to mobilizing people through The Power of Bicycles®. World Bicycle Relief accomplishes its mission by designing and distributing high quality bicycles that withstand the challenging conditions in rural Africa.
