BANGALORE, India - Sept. 4, 2014 - PRLog -- Bangalore, September 4, 2014: Rotary India Literacy Mission has taken up the Nation Builders Award scheme as part of the Teacher Support Project under its T-E-A-C-H program. As a tribute to Teachers, the Literacy Mission announced that on September 5th, it is celebrating the ‘Teachers’ Day’ by honoring 3400 Outstanding School Teachers across India with the Nation Builders Award.

Each Award is being given at the Rotary Club level. RI District 3190 covering Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Tumkur, Kolar, Mandya, and Ramanagaram District in Karnataka and Chitoor District in Andhra Pradesh will honour 100 Outstanding Teachers with “Nation Builders Award” this Teachers Day. The Awards are conferred by the District Governor Rtn. Manjunath Shetty and Rotary International Director Rtn. P.T. Prabhkar.

Teachers are the true Nation Builders. They reach out to children and shape their lives; they help build the nation’s future. The T-E-A-C-H program aims to help bring about total literacy in India. It is the most significant initiative that the Rotarians in India have taken up so far, energized by the success of the Polio eradication program that has rid India of this scourge.

According to the scheme, teachers of Government/Zilla Parishad/Municipal schools, teaching primary (I to V) and/or upper primary (VI to VII) classes, one out of every 15 teachers is being awarded. This evaluation process is designed to serve the dual purpose of awarding outstanding teachers, on one hand, and identifying the low scoring teachers for training and retraining. The teacher evaluation has been done by the students and the Principal/Head Teacher of the school. 10 students or 5% of the student strength have evaluated each teacher in a school. A separate evaluation sheet has been provided for the Principal/Head Teacher of the school. The marks awarded by the Principal/Head Teacher carries 5 times the weight of the marks given by the students of that school.

The scheme has been conducted at the school level by Rotarians, their spouses and Rotaractors, acting as volunteers, by distributing evaluation forms and interacting with the students in their

classes to help them fill in the evaluation sheets. The volunteers then tabulated the marks given by the students and the Principal/Head Teacher with due weightage to the latter to arrive at the rank for each evaluated teacher in each school. The teacher with the highest score in the group of 15 teachers evaluated is marked as the Outstanding Teacher and awarded.
