When you hear of most startups looking to build their businesses, donations to charity are not at the front of their minds but are planned for future occasions when the startup is stable and able to give.

reQwip, a new technology startup creating an online marketplace to buy and sell cycling, triathlon and outdoor adventure sports equipment, is challenging the idea of waiting to give back and looking to show that anytime is a good time to give back to the community.

reQwip is a “sharing economy” startup that just launched its beta marketplace in Austin, TX in August 2014.

If you haven’t already heard, the sharing economy is hot – to the tune of $26 billion in annual revenue according to Fast Company – and pertains to people sharing services and products, or client to client rather than business to business or business to consumer. Also known as “collaborative consumption,” the idea is that trust and transactions are given to the consumer, or in simpler terms, people helping people within their respective communities.

These values of people helping people in the sharing economy echo reQwip’s ethos and reinforce its decision to donate all of its 2014 profits to charity.

reQwip aims to be a community builder and supporter, and the company hopes its decision will encourage other companies to have this mentality as well.

“Our goal is create the most trusted marketplace for buying and selling sports gear,” commented reQwip founder and CEO, Dan Driscoll. “Trust is earned, not given, so we think it’s a natural fit for our business to make a strong statement out of the gate that we support local charities, teams and advocacy organizations. In addition to our regular volunteer efforts, we think it is important to donate our profits to worthy causes related to health and recreation.”

If there is any question as to whether startups can make an impact in their communities from the beginning, reQwip is proving that answer is absolutely, “Yes we can.”
