MENDHAM, N.J. - Aug. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- A Mendham, N.J., dentist says a visit to the dentist office is an important part of back-to-school preparations.

While haircuts, new clothes, notebooks, pens and electronics are high on every back-to-school list, Dr. Karen Fenichel of Jockey Hollow Dentistry (http://www.jockeyhollowdentistry.com) urged parents to keep their child’s smile bright and mouth healthy.

“Studies show that a person’s smile is among the first things others notice,” she said.
“Everyone wants their children to make good first impressions on teachers and peers. A smile also helps create a good self-image and self-confidence.

“On the other hand, tooth decay is still the most common childhood disease,” she added. “Cavities cause pain and impair a child’s ability to eat, speak, sleep and learn.”

Dr. Fenichel suggests three things parents can do to keep their child’s smile bright and mouth healthy in the new school year:

1.      Schedule a dental visit. It’s especially important that children see their dentist twice a year because there are so many changes going on, including baby teeth coming out and adult teeth coming in. As shocking as it seems, 60 percent of school-age children don’t see a dentist annually.

2.      Re-establish good dental habits, such as brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Celebrate back-to-school time by letting your child pick out a new toothbrush.

3.      Get back to good eating and snacking habits. Plan some healthy after-school snacks and stock the refrigerator and cabinets. Healthy snacks are foods that are non-sticky, low in sugar and don’t contain acid.

Dr. Fenichel urged parents to discuss their children’s oral health needs with their dentist.

“Keeping your children’s mouth healthy is a year-round responsibility,” said Dr. Fenichel. “By keeping their mouths healthy, kids are happier and more receptive to learning all year.”

Dr. Fenichel is the principal at Jockey Hollow Dentistry (http://www.jockeyhollowdentistry.com/?utm_source=PublicRe...), a general dentistry practice in Mendham, N.J. A graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Fenichel welcomes patients of all ages.
