Destin's Summer is Turning out to be Anything but OrdinaryThe days of a sleepy beach town are over as unique happenings ripple through the coast.
By: Edgewater Beach Condo Summertime along the Emerald Coast also welcomes the 'ancients of the Gulf' to the beaches. Local biologists endeavor to learn more about these beautiful creatures and the dangers human pose. For example, while it’s a common pastime for beachgoers to play in the sand and dig large holes, if not filled in, these holes become deadly traps for nesting turtles. Thus, Emerald Coast Turtle Watch is offering Nighttime Educational Beach Walks every Monday and Thursday during the summer. Anyone can learn about sea turtles, their nesting habits and other wildlife along the beaches of Destin. Edgewater Beach Condominiums is offering beachfront accommodations for anyone looking to enjoy the rare wildlife and beauty of the Emerald Coast. Another rarity on the coast is the Destin Beach Safety crew. These lifeguards now have the distinction of being the best in the state. The recognition came in the form of a first place win by the Destin team at the James P. “Mac” McCarthy Memorial Regional Surf Lifesaving Championships in Clearwater Beach in July. Destin’s outstanding performance topped that of 27 lifeguard teams from all over Florida in the Small Beach Control Division. To add to the list of exciting summertime events, Harborwalk Village celebrates local heroes with a fireworks display each Thursday and Baytowne Wharf lights up the sky with another display each Tuesday for Boomin’ Tuesdays.
