HOLLY, Mich. - July 22, 2014 - PRLog -- Rose Hill Center, a residential psychiatric rehabilitation facility for adults with severe mental illness, has unveiled a new Co-Occurring Rehabilitation Program for individuals who are suffering from mental illness and drug or alcohol addiction. The announcement was made today by Rose Hill Center President and CEO Ben Robinson.

“Serving individuals with mental illness who also have a coexisting substance use disorder is more complicated than the treatment of either condition alone,” said Robinson. “The key to recovery is often integrated treatment for both disorders. In the Co-Occurring Rehabilitation Program, the Rose Hill staff works with each individual to create and implement a comprehensive, individualized plan that allows the patients to address their physical, mental, and emotional goals in recovery.”

The new program, directed by Vice President of Programs, Cheryl Wallace, LMSW, combines therapeutic strategies from the fields of both psychiatry and addiction treatment. In an effort to foster long-term mental health stability and sobriety, the Co-Occurring Rehabilitation Program provides meaningful experiences and tools needed for recovery. These include educational programming, group and individual therapy, healthy mind and body activities such as yoga, art and exercise, and a 12-step recovery program.

“Substance Use Disorder is a complex, yet treatable disease,” said Wallace. “Mental illness and drug and alcohol addiction often go hand-in-hand when individuals abuse substances as an unhealthy coping mechanism.”

Individuals can admit directly into the program or transition from the Rose Hill Residential Rehabilitation Program once they are psychiatrically stable enough to tolerate the stringent structure. A clinical team consisting of a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse, social worker and an experienced addiction counselor will guide each patient through structured programming, therapy and other activities designed to overcome the symptoms of both the mental health disorder and the substance use disorder, and establish a foundation for lifelong recovery.

Admission criteria include: at least 18 years of age; diagnosed with a major mental health illness and substance use disorder; motivated to participate in structured daily programming; independent with personal care and daily living activities; have no cognitive limitations that would interfere with programming; have made at least one attempt to address the substance use disorder; not in need of physical detoxification from drugs or alcohol; have been sober for the two weeks prior to admission; and not currently dangerous to self or others.
