Follow on Google News | $8,000 in Scholarships Awarded to Skagit WomenBy: Skagit Women in Business Burlington, WA, July 14, 2014: Skagit Women in Business, (SWIB), recently awarded $8,000 in scholarships to deserving local women. Each year SWIB offers scholarships to local women who are furthering their careers after an unexpected break in their education. This year's five recipients had one thing in common - they are all pursuing degrees at Skagit Valley College. But the group’s diversity is just as interesting - with career objectives ranging from nursing to welding and ages spanning more than three decades The scholarship winners and their chosen career fields are as follows (from left to right): Brandy Flock - Welding Marcie Blair, Welding April Sandobal - Nursing Beina Li - Nursing Jesse Rees - Psychology/Social Work Gina Castro - Early Childhood Education “The scholarship allowed me to buy the tools I needed, which otherwise would have taken me a decade to get,” said welding student, Brandy Flock. SWIB President, Jeanne Law, added, “It’s very rewarding to know we could help these women’s futures in some small way.” Among the requirements to be considered for a scholarship, a woman must be returning to school after a (minimum) two-year absence, live in Skagit County, and demonstrate financial need. SWIB raises scholarship monies through an annual formal event and auction. This year's event, 'Puttin’ on the Ritz ' will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2014 in Burlington at Christ the King church. The group hopes to raise enough money to increase the number of scholarships for 2015.
