LAS VEGAS - May 28, 2014 - PRLog -- Scott Wood, building science expert, & certified thermographer, named by United Infrared as a speaker at the Thermal Imaging Conference 2014 Las Vegas. Wood is a respected & widely acknowledged spokesman in the infrared thermal imaging industry

Mr. Wood will be speaking at two different sessions: "Moisture Surveying of Buildings" as well as "The Science of Buildings".

ABSTRACT: THE SCIENCE OF BUILDINGS

Building Science is the science of how buildings interact with the local environment and its occupants. Typically Building Science is the study of Heat, Air, and Moisture flows (HAMM) within the building enclosure. HAMM are important processes to the understanding of a buildings' comfort, energy use, sustainability or basic building performance.

To investigate a building thoroughly we look at the buildings HAMM, and "see" heat, air and moisture flows using infrared thermography. Infrared thermography provides the means to make heat visible by detecting energy emitted from objects within the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum allowing the trained thermography to “see” HAMM. This presentation will discuss the fundamentals of building science and give a basic understanding of the four building barriers to HAMM, demonstrating how easily infrared thermography allows the investigator to "see" heat, air and moisture flows.

ABSTRACT: LOCATING MOISTURE IN BUILDING

Locating moisture in buildings may be difficult without the use of tools such as moisture meters or infrared thermography. In years past, moisture mapping required many multiple measurements using moisture meters. Unlike the required contact necessary for moisture meters, infrared thermography utilizes noncontact as well as nondestructive methods.

In most cases thermography used for moisture detection utilizes evaporative cooling to spot wet building materials. When evaporative cooling is present, thermal anomalies typically provide distinctly rounded cooler patterns. If moisture is trapped within the enclosure and not evaporating, its thermal capacitance will allow infrared to detect the thermal anomaly. This talk will provide basic methods to evaluate building materials using infrared thermography for moisture, including providing additional methods for proper interpretation.

As an expert in building science thermography, he provides consulting/investigation for commercial and residential buildings, performing investigations on hundreds of buildings using infrared thermography, water and pressure testing evaluating and discovering defects as well as providing corrective recommendations to prevent heat loss, air infiltration and moisture intrusion. A decade ago he created and provided content development for the ITC/BSI building science thermography classes. Through his own company, SWA CONSULTING he has continued this class, developing and providing his own version of a 32 hour level I and II Building Science Thermorgaphy class. In addition, his involvement in the building and thermography sciences includes numerous publications, clinics, workshops and presentations. One includes the appendix G for the IEA ECBCS Annex 46, Energy Process Assessment 2009 Protocol for the use of thermography in building energy assessments.

As an ITC trained level III thermographer, he provides very unique knowledge and experience in building sciences allowing me ot assess buildings more effectively, quickly and comprehensively as well as providing a special skill set as instructor and presenter for building science and thermography.
