WASHINGTON, DC
—Dr. Ayguen Sahin met with Senator Markey’s Senior Policy Advisor for Health and Environment and staff to talk about the importance of cancer patient empowerment and government funding.

Dr. Sahin, Founder and CEO of Cancer Research Simplified, met with Senator Markey’s Senior Advisor, Dr. Avenel Joseph, and Dr. Shannon L. Hader, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow, and discussed 1) the importance of cancer education for patient empowerment and patients taking charge of their disease, 2) the need for non-technical, simplified cancer information for patients and the general public, 3) the importance of giving emphasis on development of next generation cancer researchers, starting from young ages and emphasizing our CRS Youth ProgramTM, which aims to provide cancer research scholarships to high school students worldwide, and 4) the need for more governmental funding for cancer education for patients as well as young students.

“It was such an important meeting for our organization, emphasizing the importance of patient empowerment, so that cancer patients can take charge of their disease," said Dr. Sahin. “It is of utmost importance that we bring cancer patients in at such a level that they can actively participate in the decision process regarding their treatment options and fate of their disease. This may only be possible through cancer patient education, which we aimed to tackle full force.”  Dr. Sahin continues by explaining how Cancer Research Simplified has helped many people worldwide through its educational programs. “A breast cancer patient, Zeynep from Germany, now a survivor who we have interviewed, explained to us how she was so happy to finally be able to understand an advertisement on the wall she always saw during her chemotherapy sessions about a cancer type she just had learned about by watching our first episode, “cancer types” video.  Furthermore, we have guided many patients from Europe and the US to specific centers and hospitals specializing in their disease. We simply answer the questions many cancer patients ask after diagnosis: Where to go, what to do, what is my disease all about?”

Within one and a half years of existence, Cancer Research Simplified has produced 43 videos, 32 e-newsletters and many articles in four languages, organized multiple public events, attended many sponsored events, and attracted tens of thousands of viewers to its website and multiple social media platforms from around the globe and all of the United States.

Dr. Sahin receives emails and calls every day from students worldwide, whom are keen on becoming cancer scientists but either don’t have the opportunity in their countries or get discouraged by the challenging environment. “I receive phone calls and emails every day from students around the globe with so much passion for science. They’re asking for guidance from our scholarship program, and they are expressing their willingness to join us”, said Dr. Sahin, “With our visit to our Senator’s office, our goal was to create awareness about the need for development of our youth program, which requires funding at corporate and governmental levels.”
