Follow on Google News | Seniors Rock at Florida Assisted Living FacilityOver 30 seniors rocked to the music of The Koss Music and Cultural Arts Institute at the Horizon Bay Assisted Living Facility in Lutz, Florida on May 6, 2014. They danced and sang to Big Band hits and renditions of Wayne Newton's "Red Roses".
By: Koss Music and Cultural Arts Institute Greg Koss, the Executive Director of the Koss Music and Cultural Arts Institute with Burt Leppla, a faculty member at the Institute had the residents dancing in the isles to the sounds of Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" as well as other other Big Band hits from Tony Dorsey, Guy Lombardo, Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Wayne Newton, Robert Goulet, Vic Damone, Jerry Vale and more. The new program is to bring music of that era to seniors who live there. When Greg broke out with Wayne Newton's "Red Roses for a Blue Lady", the audience started singing along with him so well that at the end, he told them that they're all "going on the road with him"!! George, a resident who watched the show, came up to Greg after the performance and said " You must be doing something right!! I've never seen this before! Everyone stayed to the very last song even though lunch had already been served 15 minutes ago in the adjacent cafeteria !" Joel Dayock, Executive Director of Horizon Bay in Lutz said "its great to see people enjoy the music of their era. It makes them feel young because it brings back memories of their youth." "Music is an integral part of life that all humans can relate to" said Greg, who would like to put a complete music program together for Horizon Bay which would include classroom studies and individual private lessons for those interested. "What a great thing for these people to learn at this time in their lives that will bring them joy and happiness." Greg has been teaching music to seniors at the Institute for 10 years and saw first hand how it helps seniors with their hand-eye coordination and spacial-temporal thinking. " We need to bring music of their era to seniors all over the state." Koss Music and Cultural Arts Institute is a non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged, underprivileged and low-income youth through music education.
