Follow on Google News | National Volunteer Month has added significance after devastating fire at senior communityColonial Courtyard at Clearfield staff appreciates life-saving efforts of first responders
By: IntegraCare Shomo, who is executive director of Colonial Courtyard at Clearfield, knows that a tragic situation might have been even worse had it not been for the actions of so many people on that night. No one was injured even though the building was a complete loss. “The courage and dedication displayed by so many members of fire departments, police departments and the first responders was extraordinary,” “Times like these make you appreciate people who volunteer to protect and serve the public. With April being National Volunteer Month, we really want to say thanks as we continue in the rebuilding process at Colonial Courtyard at Clearfield.” A lightning strike preceded the fast-moving fire. Staff and residents were prepared after months of fire safety training and fire drills. At the time, residents felt as if the late-night drills and evacuations were a hassle. But when the fire spread, those once annoying drills paid off in life-saving fashion. Firefighters representing 22 fire companies responded to the blaze. Many of those were volunteers. The actions of the Lawrence Township Police Department, Clearfield Borough Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police also were pivotal. Clearfield Hospital, Clearfield EMS, the Clearfield County Emergency Management team and the American Red Cross played important roles. The IBEW’s communications class students and instructor also rushed from a nearby classroom to the fire scene and offered assistance. Many other senior living communities, eateries and restaurants, pharmacies, bus lines and even dentists offered their services on the night of the fire or in the days after the blaze. “We have plenty to be thankful for almost a year later,” said Sandy English, Director of Sales and Marketing at Colonial Courtyard at Clearfield. “So many people offered assistance in so many different ways. We’re rebuilding and will be back stronger in spirit than ever.” Demolition of the fire-damaged facility is complete and ground-breaking for a new Colonial Courtyard at Clearfield is expected to occur soon.
