By: Bardstown-Nelson County Tourist & Conv. Commission A good man is easy to find America’s first pop artist can be found on stage in picturesque Bardstown: The musical spectacle, “The Stephen Foster Story,” brings to life the tunes everyone knew in the mid- to late-1800s (and still know today) and the man who composed them: “Oh! Susanna,” “Camptown Races,” “My Old Kentucky Home.” During the high-stepping musical production, 175 colorful costumes swirl beneath a starlit sky and a paddlewheel boat drops anchor right on stage. The music will have you singing along, and the exceptional set design against a darkening sky and just over the rise from the real “My Old Kentucky Home” will wow you. The show runs on select dates June 14 to Aug. 16. You’ll also find the Peanuts gang in Bardstown. What’s it like to be Charlie Brown? Find out in “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” the award-winning Broadway musical that puts everyone’s favorite blockhead on stage Thursdays and Saturdays, July 10 through Aug. 9. Combination tickets with tours of Federal Hill in My Old Kentucky Home State Park and/or Old Bardstown Village and The Civil War Museums available. www.StephenFoster.com Time capsule of 1950s summer stock theatre At Danville’s Pioneer Playhouse – an enchantingly rustic theatre whose stage hosted a teen-age John Travolta in 1969 – catch a variety of shows through the outdoor summer theatre season, including: “Whodunnit, Darling?” (June 6-21); “Is He Dead?” ( June 24-July 5); “The Wonder Team” world premiere (July 8-19); and “Walking Across Egypt” ( July 22-Aug. 2). Come for dinner, served one hour before show time, or tour a turn-of-the- Fort is alive with the sound of music The James Harrod Amphitheatre within rugged Old Fort Harrod State Park makes a perfect backdrop for the shows staged here. The season opens with “The Sound of Music”(8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, June 12-15 and 19-22) coming to the hills of Kentucky and presented by Harrodsburg’ Witness the clash over territory rights when “James Harrod: The Battle For Kentucky” returns 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, July 3-5, 10-12, 17-19 and 24-26. Working from a historically accurate script and with the cast donned in historically accurate costumes gives the performances power and punch – that, and the black powder rifles that blaze, boom and smoke during the production. Actor Allan Barlow shines as the conflicted James Harrod and is supported by a group of seasoned actors who make you care what happens to these early settlers to Kentucky and their land claim. Combo ticket, available at Old Fort Harrod State Park and Ragged Edge, includes admission to the show and a fort tour with a $1 discount off each. www.FriendsofFortHarrod.com Theatre weekend Plan your visit to catch two or three shows over a single weekend.
