Seminar on “Organized v/s Unorganized Retail: Finding the balance”

March 29, 2014 - PRLog -- New Delhi, Saturday, March 29, 2014: The Indian retail sector is a study in contrast, it has the largest number of retail outlets in the world but the per-capita retail space available is only 2 sq. ft. India is facing problem in balancing the retail sector as the growth of organized retail has been uneven with certain parts in particular growing more rapidly than the others. Therefore to brainstorm on the topic “Organized v/s Unorganized Retail: Finding the balance” JIMS is organizing 9th national seminar on Monday March, 31,2014 at Deshmukh auditorium, India International Centre.

The seminar will bring together the experts from both industry and academia to understand the way forward for the Indian retail sector and the possibility of developing a uniquely Indian model. The key speakers who will share their thoughts on the topic are  Dr. A. K. Sengupta, Ex-Dean, IIFT, Prof. S. C. Sharma, Professor of Economics, IBS, Gurgaon, Mr. Atulit Saxena, COO, Future Brand Limited, Mr. Rasul Bailay, Business Editor (Retail), Economic Times and Mr. Tinku Singh, Group Head, SRS

The Government of India has allowed FDI in Retail in both single (100%) and multi- brand formats (51%), subject to state approval and the stipulation that 30% sourcing of goods  be done within India. The retail Sector in India is one of the largest contributors to GDP and employs the largest number of people after agriculture. In contrast to other countries, unorganized retail has a 97% share of the Indian retail market even today despite the rapid growth of the organized retail in the last few years
