HellermannTyton quadruples light levels in its Manchester factory thanks to LED lighting solution

March 21, 2014 - PRLog -- A GLOBAL manufacturer of high performance and innovative cable management solutions has almost quadrupled light levels in its Manchester factory thanks to an LED lighting solution.

Thanks to the innovative lighting provided by MHA Lighting, HellermannTyton has almost quadrupled the light levels in parts of its Manchester manufacturing site from an average of 90 lux to 400.

Switching to LED lighting was part of the forward-thinking company’s strategy to improve light levels in former warehouse areas that are now being used for production, whilst ultimately reducing associated energy costs and CO2.

With thousands of people depending on HellermannTyton’s products in a variety of environments, it was imperative that light output, light quality and uniformity were high quality so as to aid precision working and general inspection.

With its low-energy luminaires and ability to design bespoke, precision lighting solutions – MHA was ultimately chosen from four lighting companies who quoted for the work.

Chris Brookes, HSE Officer at HellermannTyton, said: “We had looked to four well-known lighting companies to get different quotes for these projects, but only MHA actually surveyed the areas and discussed our specific lighting needs with us.

“From the very beginning their attention to detail was amazing – nothing was too much trouble and everything was about us ultimately getting the right solution for the individual application.

“We are absolutely delighted with the results and can honestly say that we got what we wanted.

“Feedback from the team here has been really positive to the point I am being asked by employees if their area can be done next.”

This project saw a total of 33 MHA Lighting TiLite luminaires installed with five daylight saving sensors to maximise natural daylight from existing skylights. These fittings supply 75 CRI and 5700 kelvin colour temperature.

Not only have the desired lux levels been achieved but the historic low-level task lighting in this production area is no longer necessary and has been switched off - thus providing additional energy savings.

At the same time MHA Lighting replaced 75 72watt fluorescent fittings in the corridors surrounding the production areas with 75 of MHA’S award-wining TiLite 20/180 fittings, which are just 29watts including ballast.  As a result lighting energy consumption in this area was reduced by 69%, equating to a £2,700 saving in energy costs annually.

These fittings also supply 75 CRI and 5700 kelvin colour temperature and will reduce CO2 emissions by 160 tonnes during the product’s eight year predicted lifetime.

Chris added: “It is so refreshing to have absolute confidence in a supplier. MHA Lighting promised us a two week lead time for our production area and all work was done within that time frame. Nothing was too much trouble. They even fitted the lights at a higher height to accommodate the operation of a crane in that area.

“I cannot praise MHA enough and only wish MHA Lighting had been around 20 years ago.”

Tom Harrison, MHA Lighting MD, said: “We were invited to HellermannTyton at an advanced stage of an internal project ‘Changing the lighting to become more energy efficient.’ Chris at HellermannTyton had already spoken with three other manufacturers and we were the fourth to be introduced.

“We offered schemes and proposals within a week. Chris was impressed with our attention to detail and level of customer service – we explained everything at every step of the process and ensured the scheme was precisely relevant to what the space was being used for.

“It has been a pleasure to work with HellermannTyton on these projects, especially with them being a fellow Manchester-based manufacturer.

“Their commitment to improving the lit environment at the site is impressive and the team at MHA Lighting are delighted to be playing our part in helping them achieve their goals.”

About MHA Lighting:

MHA Lighting is an award-winning lighting manufacturer based in Greater Manchester. MHA Lighting is the only LED manufacturer to shine light sideways into encapsulation avoiding direct contact with the eye and providing a safe and efficient light output. They also use acrylic rods to amplify and control the light output, reducing the number of LEDs required.

This means they can use high power LEDs, draw less current and have no need to diffuse the output. Their patented lighting technology uses two-thirds of the energy of other LED competitors.

Since late 2010 MHA has built a portfolio of Blue Chip commercial clients and public sector organisations, including: The Trafford Centre, GlaxoSmithKline, Scott Safety (A Tyco company), the NHS, Birmingham NEC, Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Airport Group, Newcastle Airport, Birmingham International Airport, Budgens, SPAR, Londis, various Local Authorities, Reckitt Benckiser and Chevron-Texaco.
